Epigrammata is a modern rendering of one of the most famous titling types of all time. The origins of the sixteenth-century model are uncertain — the type may have been cut by Peter Schoeffer’s son. (Schoeffer was partner at Fust & Schoeffer, the second press in the West.) Whatever its source, the design achieved extraordinary reach: in continuous use for well over a century, it spread from Germany and Switzerland, where it was especially prevalent, through Italy, France, Spain, England, and Holland — nearly everywhere roman types were in use. That so celebrated a design had never been revived makes Nonpareil Type’s Epigrammata all the more welcome. Capitals, figures, punctuation, and ornaments — no lowercase — make it a natural choice for titling, display, and decorative work.
